This area of study will concentrate on various aspects of professional, technical writing. The area of study is intended for students and practicing professionals who wish to develop their writing skills in order to seek or advance a career in professional writing and who wish to explore the rhetorical, linguistic, and technological context of professional writing. It is also intended for students who wish to pursue the master’s degree in professional writing as a stepping stone to further graduate study. Students can choose either Track I: at least 30 hours and foreign language requirement or Track II: at least 36 hours required.

To be admitted as a graduate student, an applicant must have obtained a baccalaureate or higher degree, prior to the start of the NIU term for which the student is admitted, from an accredited U.S. college or university or the equivalent degree from a recognized foreign institution. Applicants must have the approval of the department in which they plan to major and either must have a minimum 2.75 overall grade point average (GPA), based on a 4.00 system, in their baccalaureate program or must have completed 15 or more semester hours of graduate work at an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.20 or higher. An applicant whose native language is not English must present a TOEFL score of at least 250.
