This program is designed both for individuals who are already working in the field of aging and for students with highly individualized interests and career or educational plans. Required courses in theories of aging, retirement, minority aging, ethics and senior housing extend the knowledge of aging gained in core courses. Fifteen semester hours of elective coursework allows the selection of supporting courses in such areas as adult education, health promotion, psychology, public administration, recreation, sociology, and others.

Students must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a regionally accredited institution. Students should have completed a minimum of 9 graduate hours of gerontology and at least 3 graduate semester hours in research methods; have at least a 3.4 GPA for master’s courses; and have competitive scores on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students should have a 2.8 grade point average or higher on all undergraduate work or a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours of their undergraduate degree or a 3.4 GPA on their master's degree. International students should have obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (Internet-based), score of 550 (Paper-based) and score of 213 (Computer-based) and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall band and also should have minimum MELAB (official version) score of 80 or higher.
