Civil Engineering has a long and distinguished history among the engineering disciplines. Today, civil engineers are involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of the infrastructure that surrounds them as well as the clean-up and preservation of the natural and man-made environment. As the nation’s infrastructure continues to age and deteriorate and the environment becomes more vulnerable, civil engineers will be expected to come up with innovative ways to repair and replace the infrastructure and to preserve the environment for future generations. To accomplish this, civil engineers must be able to combine a strong technical background in math and science with excellent communication skills to educate and interact with decision makers, the construction trades, and the general public. In addition to being steeped in history and tradition, civil engineering is also one of the broadest and most diverse engineering disciplines. It includes construction engineering and management, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and hydrological engineering, structural engineering, and transportation engineering. Job opportunities for civil engineers exist at all levels of government and with a variety of consulting engineering firms and corporations, architectural and planning organizations, and in private practice. The demand for civil engineers continues to be strong. Many current practitioners in the profession are nearing retirement age at a time when there is a growing demand for infrastructure replacement, improvement, or expansion. As a result, opportunities in the field are projected to remain at high levels for the foreseeable future. The Civil Engineering Department at Lawrence Technological University provides students with the necessary skills to immediately contribute to the improvement of the nation’s infrastructure and environment and the overall quality of life for the society.

Lawrence Tech provides housing so much more than a room in which to sleep and study. All accepted students are eligible to live on campus, and freshmen are particularly encouraged to do so as planned activities and first-year student initiatives ease the transition from high school to university. It has two co-ed residence halls: University Housing-North and University Housing-South. Each features one and two bedroom apartment style suites that accommodate two to four students, depending on the size of the suite. Single rooms are available in University Housing-South. Room costs vary by residence hall and whether they select single, double, or multiple occupancy. Both buildings provide (at no extra cost). Some of the facilities are as follows: Lounges in which they can watch television, study, or socialize with friends; Wireless Internet access, email, and access to the University network; Basic cable television service; Individual telephone lines and voicemail; all utilities (heat, air conditioning, water, electricity, and gas).
