This program is designed for experienced teachers who already hold the initial license to teach and who wish to pursue more advanced study in a field of education. The M.Ed. in Languages requires 36 credit hours of study, of which no more than nine may be transfer credit. Of the 36 hours, 15 are "core" courses in foreign language education and linguistics; 15 are language-specific; and 6 are electives. At the conclusion of the program, students are required to pass a comprehensive examination or submit a professional portfolio for evaluation.

Students must have a valid teaching certificate from any state in the appropriate language and a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4-point scale. Students must have at least 30 hours of undergraduate course work, or an approved equivalent from a foreign university, in the relevant language area or Praxis II. Students must have their academic credentials evaluated by one of several credential evaluation organizations. Students must have a TOEFL score of 550 or greater or an overall band score for the IELTS is 6.5 (academic format only).
