This program provides a rigorous yet flexible academic curriculum designed to advance the legal training of those who completed their legal education in a foreign jurisdiction. The program, which can be customized to align with candidates' professional goals and interests, will prepare students to work in a multinational legal environment and improve their ability to represent clients in transactions with U.S. entities; provide solid practical and theoretical experience in the American legal system; qualify candidates to take the bar examination in Michigan, California, New York, and many other U.S. jurisdictions; augment students' understanding of the English language, legal English, and American culture; build a foundation for a lasting professional network; and enhance career opportunities. Candidates may also focus their studies in any of the following areas alternative dispute resolution; corporate law; criminal law; environmental and natural resource law; family law; health law; indigenous law; intellectual property and communications law; international and comparative law; public law and regulation; taxation law.

Students are required to complete their bachelor’s degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree, as well as high scholastic standing and suitable preparation for the intended field of study. Students should have obtained a grade point average of 3.0 or above. Students whose first language is not English and who are admitted to Michigan State University with regular admission must meet one of the following language proficiency requirements. They should have also obtained a minimum TOEFL score of 80 on internet based test (with no sub score below 19 for reading, listening, and speaking; no writing sub score below 22) and 550 on paper based test (with no sub score below 52). An IELTS score of 6.5 or higher is also required. An average score of at least 80 to 85 with no subs score below 80 is required for Michigan State University English Language Test (MSUELT) and an average score of 83 or higher (with no sub score below 80) is required for Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB).
