The College of Humanities and Fine Arts (HFA) is one the most distinguished and distinctive colleges at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. HFA uniquely unites scientists, social scientists, humanities scholars, and creative artists into one faculty passionate about its students’ education and futures. Each year, thousands of students - undergraduates as well as master’s and doctoral candidates work closely with faculty mentors to explore human history, experience world cultures, create art, and master important fields of thought, inquiry, and innovation. HFA offers its student’s unparalleled opportunities to broaden their individual perspectives, apply their knowledge to the conception and design of their own work, refine their skills, and develop professional connections. Representing the foundation of learning for the campus as a whole, the College has a hand in the education of nearly every UMass Amherst student at some point during their undergraduate experience, and one out of every five graduate students at UMass is a part of the College. With some of the lowest student-to-professor ratios on campus (46 per cent of HFA courses have fewer than 20 students), the education is both enriching and personalized. More directly, the College’s 350 plus faculty members personally mentor over 3,000 HFA graduate and undergraduate students annually in 36 majors, 25 minors, and 19 post-graduate degrees, while remaining committed to their own high level of research and creativity.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst provides on-campus, off-campus and family housing. UMass Amherst residence halls provide forty-five residence halls and four apartment buildings that are grouped into six separate and very different residential areas: Central, Northeast, Orchard Hill, Southwest, Sylvan and North. Each hall possesses its own distinctive characteristics, inspired in part by location, architecture, and by the different cultural or academic living/learning programs housed within. Each residential area houses classrooms, recreational and social centers, kitchenettes, and cultural centers. The dining program provides students, faculty and staff with an array of dining options, ranging from self-serve buffet style programs in residential locations to retail dining and the finest in catering. All freshman and sophomores living in the residence halls are required to purchase one of the three residential meal plans. All other students may select any of the residential meal plans. Family Housing offers twelve studio apartments located in Lincoln Apartments offering total 185 one-bedroom and 124 two-bedroom apartments, which are all located in either Lincoln or North Village. Family Housing also has twelve one-bedroom apartments modified for the physically disabled. There are ten furnished one-bedroom apartments in Lincoln, which can be rented for an additional fee. To be eligible to live in Family Housing, students must be married, in a domestic partnership.
