This emphasis offers students at the graduate performance level the opportunity to grow as a performance musician in combination with instruction and observation preparing them to teach in private studio and group piano class settings. Coursework includes weekly private instruction, music history, music theory, history of piano pedagogy, lesson observation in Hartt's Community Division, in depth study in private studio teaching techniques, and culminates in a full recital.

Applicants are expected to have received a bachelor’s degree in music or its equivalent from an accredited college/university. This includes but is not limited to Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Science. Candidates must demonstrate background and preparation that will contribute to probable success in the chosen curriculum. The minimum TOEFL scores expected are: GPD, and AD: 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based, or 79-80 internet-based. The minimum IELTS scores expected are: 6.5 or above on the academic test.
