This program provides teacher preparation at the master's degree level for qualified candidates who hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a major in music education. The 33-hour degree program prepares persons for T-5 certification to teach music in grades P-12. The thesis track of this degree is designed for students who may want to continue their education to the specialist or doctoral level and also leads to T-5 certification. The degree is designed to be completed in 4 semesters (summer, fall, spring and summer) and many courses are evening courses and/or on-line courses in order to fit the schedule of in-service music educator. Graduate assistantships are available.

Students hold a baccalaureate degree in music education from an accredited institution and present evidence of probable success in graduate work. Other bachelor degrees in music can be considered on an individual basis but additional coursework may be required. Interview with the music education committee. An audition for placement in the appropriate applied instruction (only if applied study is requested as an elective). A diagnostic test in theory and history or other subject as requested by the committee (only if taking theory or history). Transcripts: One official copy of all transcripts from undergraduate and graduate institutions should be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office at the time of application or at least eight weeks prior to the start of classes. Standardized Tests: MMED requires GACE II or GRE for admission (or Praxis II). Letters of Recommendation: Three letters of recommendation from persons outside the university who have knowledge of the candidate's ability to work with children and adolescents and/or potential as a graduate student (forms will be provided by Graduate Admissions). The forms should be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office (forms may be mailed or faxed).
