This program offers students an opportunity to acquire advanced understanding and skills in music education theory and practice or in musical performance. Through a comprehensive curriculum, students in this emphasis undertake core courses in musicianship, theory, history, research, and education/pedagogy. Additional courses in the area of specialization are specified relative to the interests and objectives of the student.

The courses in Music (Major Field) are Graduate Applied Music, major instrument: 8 credits; Music Literature courses (4 credits), select from: MU5203 Advance Choral Literature 2 credits, MU5204 Advance Instrumental Ensemble Literature 2 credits, MU5205 Instrumental Solo Literature 1 credit, MU5206 Vocal Solo Literature 1 (max upto 3) credits, MU5207 Instrumental Chamber Music Literature 1 credit, MU5204 Vocal Chamber Music Literature 1 credit; MU8401 Graduate Pedagogy 1 credit; MU8300 Graduate Recital 1 credit (repeat once).

Students must successfully complete a performance audition (live or taped). They must have an undergraduate degree in music and an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0. Students in voice must pass a proficiency examination in German, French, and Italian diction. Students who do not pass these examinations are required to enroll in appropriate remedial courses; (these will not fulfill graduate degree requirements). International students must have a minimum TOEFL score of 80.

The Department of Music is a primary resource for those who seek a comprehensive music education and for those who wish to enrich their lives through involvement with music. The mission of the Department is to give students the highest quality musical instruction, preparing them to be teachers, creators, performers, and appreciators of music. Music students and faculty play a leading role in offering cultural and artistic enrichment to the campus, community, and Upper Midwest through outreach and scholarly/creative activities. The Department is committed to assisting students achieve demanding standards of performance and scholarship in both classroom and artistic endeavors, and to helping them make ethical and gratifying choices to shape their citizenship within the musical community. It offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in music and provides students the highest level of instruction in classes, applied studio lessons, and ensembles, as well as exceptional advisement. In addition, the Department enjoys the benefit of a brilliant new performance venue, Weber Music Hall, designed by international architect Cesar Pelli. Weber Music Hall opened in October 2002 with remarkable reviews from artists and audiences. Music majors at UMD are eligible to compete for numerous scholarship awards, and graduate students consistently receive tuition fellowship support.

The Office of Residence Life believes that campus living is integral to a student's educational experience. The purpose of residence life is to promote community development and personal growth. In choosing to live on campus, a student-resident commits to participate as a positive citizen in an educational community; a community characterized by respect, responsibility and opportunity. A variety of furnished housing is available at UMD for students who wish to live in University residence halls and apartments. The University offers housing to 1,564 students in traditional residence halls and 1,455 students in apartment-style units. Residence Hall rooms are furnished with beds and mattresses, draperies, desks, chairs, drawer space, study lamps, wastebaskets, compact refrigerator, local telephone service and telephone, basic cable TV service and Ethernet computer connection for each resident. Almost all rooms in the residence halls are designed for two students. Students living in the residence halls must provide their own bed linens (pillows, sheets, pillow cases, blankets and bedspreads). Apartment units are furnished with refrigerator, stove, couch and chair, end table, dining table and chairs, beds and mattresses, desks, chairs, dressers, desk lamps, shower curtain, draperies, local telephone service and telephone, basic cable TV service, and Ethernet computer connection for each resident. Students living in the University apartment s must provide their own cooking and eating utensils, wastebaskets, and bed linens (pillows, sheets, pillow case, blanket and bedspread). Each apartment is designed for four students.
