This program creates a unique opportunity to address both the how and the why questions that face nonprofit organizations. If the students are interested in becoming a reflective practitioner, this program is designed for them. An education in both the technical and conceptual aspects of philanthropy increases their value in the job market.

This program module includes core requirements: (21 hours): SPEA-V 506 Statistical Analysis for Effective Decision Making (3 cr.), SPEA-V 517 Public Management Economics (3 cr.), SPEA-V 525 Management in the Nonprofit Sector(3 cr.), SPEA-V 526 Financial Management for Nonprofit Organizations (3 cr.), SPEA-V 540 Law and Public Affairs (3 cr.), SPEA-V 598 Governing and Leading in a Global Society (3 cr.), SPEA-V 600 Capstone in Public and Environmental Affairs (3 cr.), required nonprofit management courses: (6 cr): SPEA-V 521 or PHST-P 521 The Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector (3 cr), SPEA-V 522 Human Resource Mgmt in Nonprofit Organizations (3 cr.), required courses in philanthropic studies: (12 cr ): PHST-P 523 Civil Society and Philanthropy, HIST-H 509 History of Philanthropy in the West or H516 History of American Philanthropy, PHIL-P 542 Ethics and Values of Philanthropy, ECON-E 514 Nonprofit Economy and Public Policy, or PHST-P 535 Law of Nonprofit Organizations, nonprofit application courses: (9 cr): three of the following courses: SPEA-V 550 Topics in Public Affairs: Leadership and Board Development (3 cr.), SPEA-V 544 Marketing for Nonprofit Organizations (3 cr.), SPEA-V 557 Proposal Development and Grant Administration (3cr.) Organizations (3cr.), SPEA-V 558 Fund Development for Nonprofit, SPEA-V 559 Principles and Practices of Social Entrepreneurship (3 cr.), SPEA-V 602 Strategic Management for Public and Nonprofit Organizations (3 cr.), PHST-P 535 Law of Nonprofit Organizations, or other appropriate course approved by the faculty advisor, one comparative elective in philanthropic studies: (3 cr), REL-R 590 Religion and Philanthropy/Comparative Religious Ethics, PHST P-530 Civil Society in Comparative Perspective, ANTH-A 509 Cross-Cultural Dimensions of Philanthropy, one additional elective course approved by the faculty advisor: (3 cr), Internship in philanthropic studies: (3 cr), PHST-P 590, Thesis: (3 cr).

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a grade point average of "B" (3.0) or higher and a combined score of 1000 or more (verbal and quantitative) on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or a total score of 500 on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) with coursework (not mandatory) in MATH-M 110 or higher (algebra), ECON-E 201 (microeconomics), and SPEA-K 300 (statistics). International applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based version), 237 (computer-based version), total score 92 (Internet-based version) or an IELTS score of 6.5 or successful completion of ELS Language Centers Intensive Program Level 112. Students from Japan must have a "Pre-First Grade" score on the STEP Eiken.
