The educational format of the EVMS Graduate Art Therapy Program is didactic and experiential, integrating psycho dynamic concepts with humanistic and family systems approaches. Students learn various theories and are then encouraged to develop their own theoretical approach to the practice of art therapy. Coursework, internship, and weekly individual and group art therapy supervision develop the students' knowledge and clinical skills. The program provides training in research, culminating in the completion of a master's thesis. While the core curriculum has a mental health focus, other areas of emphasis are offered: medical art therapy, school art therapy, and family art therapy. Personal art making is required across the curriculum in a variety of assignments, including visual journaling. In the process of becoming art therapists, students integrate theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and supervised experience obtained in internship placements at participating agencies.

Students should hold a bachelor degree from an accredited college or university with an undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or a demonstration of an equivalent degree. They should have grades converted to the U.S. grading system by a recognized organization should a non-U.S. grading system have been utilized at the institutions attended; Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last 5 years with a combined score of 800 or greater on the verbal and quantitative sections and at least a 3.5 on the analytic section for non-probationary admission. Preference will be given to candidates with combined verbal and quantitative scores of 1000 or greater. TOEFL score of 108 or greater for internet based tests and 610 or greater for paper based test is required for applicants whose native language is not English.
