This option is structured to prepare scholars in the fields of early childhood education, child development, or family science. Students have the opportunity to develop skills necessary for professional achievement in basic and applied research settings, in higher education, in public and private organizations, and in the child and family program evaluation and policy arenas. The strength of this master's program is based on three major components: the integration of early childhood education, child development, and family science; specialization in early childhood education, child development, or family science; and an emphasis on becoming proficient producers and consumers of research. Both nonthesis and thesis options are available. The nonthesis option requires the completion of a professional paper/project and additional supporting course work. A master's thesis option that is concurrently specialized and integrative in nature reflects the complexity of the disciplinary subject matter, provides a broader context to formulate theoretical questions, and broadens the empirical literature for addressing those questions.

Student who has received a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university may apply for admission to the Division of Graduate Education(DGE). The DGE provides two application options: an online application and a paper application. Paper applications may be downloaded or are available from the department to which you are applying as well as from the DGE. All paper application materials for graduate degree programs must be submitted directly to the department to which you are applying. All paper application materials for non-degree graduate status must be submitted to the Division of Graduate Education. At the time of application, each student is assigned a MSU student identification number. We ask that you voluntarily provide a social security number to help distinguish between individuals with the same or similar names. You will not be penalized should you decline to provide this number. Federal law requires that students applying for financial aid, graduate assistantships, fellowships, traineeships, or tuition waivers must provide their Social Security number for purposes of identification.
