The Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Family Studies is an interdisciplinary degree that includes courses from the disciplines of Human Behavior and Development and Counseling. The student explores the dynamics within families and close relations and the interaction between the family and the larger social system including schools, communities and the larger society. The program emphasizes the philosophy and principles of family life education. The degree enables graduates to identify families in conflict and families with issues in order to help resolve them. Because the subject of family studies is such a universal topic, there is a wealth of organizations designed to deal with family issues. Some opportunities might include social service agencies, religious institutions, parent education programs, juvenile services, day care facilities, foster care programs, and retirement and/or assisted living facilities.

The required graduate studies are RGS6035 Theory and Application of Research Methods 3 hours, RGS6036 Ethics for Decision Making 3 hours. The major course requirements are CSL6801 Life Span Development 3 hours, CSL6822 Family in Crisis 3 hours, HBD6767 Family Studies 3 hours, HBD6768 Aging & End of Life Issues 3 hours, HBD6769 Human Sexuality 3 hours, HBD6771 Conflict Mgmt/Resolution 3 hours, Counseling and/or Human Behavior and Development Electives 12 hours.

General requirements apply to all masters’ degrees. The minimum amount of work beyond the bachelor's degree required for a master's degree is 36 semester hours excluding any prerequisite courses that may be required. All courses taken to satisfy course requirements for a master's degree must be taken at the graduate level. Twenty-four (24) semester hours applicable to the degree must be completed at Amberton University. The student must have a minimum grade point average of 3.00. No more than six (6) semester hours of credit with a grade of C may be applied toward meeting requirements for a graduate degree. A grade of D may not be applied toward a graduate degree. The student will be allowed to graduate by meeting the requirements for the degree in force at the time of initial enrollment, provided the student is within twenty-four (24) hours of graduating and completes no less than twelve (12) hours per year.
