This program is organized into six areas of concentration. The Materials area deals with the design, fabrication, characterization, and simulation of materials. It includes study of the properties and structure of matter and their relationship, strength of materials, composites, nano materials and elements of applied physics and chemistry. Students may choose either the thesis or the non-thesis option for their programs. Thesis Option requires nine credit hours of research thesis (ME 698), minimum nine credit hours of primary area courses, and maximum six (6) credit hours of related area courses, between the primary and related area courses, at least three courses (nine credit hours) must be ME courses and six credit hours of mathematics or mathematics related courses. This program deals with the materials track with thesis option.

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree in engineering, science, or technology, and meet the minimum requirements for undergraduate proficiency in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale and GRE score on the quantitative section is at least 650 and above and for the analytical writing section is at least 4.0 and above. International applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based version), 213 (computer-based version), total score 79 (Internet-based version) with writing score of 18, speaking score of 18, listening score of 14, reading score of 19 or an IELTS score of 6.0 or successful completion of ELS Language Centers Intensive Program Level 112. Students from Japan must have a "Pre-First Grade" score on the STEP Eiken.
