This program is organized into six areas of concentration. The fluid and thermal sciences area includes study of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, combustion, energy systems, thermal design, and computational fluid dynamics. Students may choose either the thesis or the non-thesis option for their programs. Non-Thesis option requires minimum of 12 credit hours of primary area courses, maximum of 12 credit hours of related area courses, including up to six credit hours of ME 597 Mechanical Engineering Projects I, and between the primary and relates area courses, at least 15 credit hours must be ME, with six credit hours of mathematics or mathematics-related courses. This program deals with the thermal science track with non thesis option.

This program module includes Engineering courses: a minimum of two courses from the following for both thesis and non-thesis options, any mechanical engineering course at or above the 500 level; any two closely related electrical engineering courses at or above the 500 level; Preferred mathematics courses for all tracks are: MATH 537 Applied Mathematics for Scientists and Engineers I (3 cr.), MATH 528 Advanced Mathematics for Scientists and Engineers II (3 cr.), Other math courses are: MATH 510 Vector Calculus (3 cr.), MATH 511 Linear Algebra with Applications (3 cr.), MATH 523 Introduction to Partial Differential Equations (3 cr.), MATH 578 Mathematical Modeling of Physical Systems (3 cr.), ME courses with strong math content are: ME 551 Finite Element Analysis (3 cr.), ME 552 Advanced Applications of Finite Element Methods (3 cr.), ME 581 Numerical Methods in Mechanical Engineering (3 cr.), ME 614 Computational Fluid Dynamics (3 cr.), EE 580 Optimization Methods for Systems and Control (3 cr.), EE 600 Random Variables (3 cr.), PHYS 550 Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (3 cr.), PHYS 600 Mathematical Methods in Physics (3 cr.), Graduate Seminar: ME 597 Topics: ME Graduate Seminar (0 cr.), Primary-area courses for the thermal sciences track are as follows: ME 500 Thermodynamics (3 cr.), ME 505 Heat and Mass Transfer (3 cr.), ME 509 Intermediate Fluid Mechanics (3 cr.), ME 510 Gas Dynamics (3 cr.), ME 525 Combustion (3 cr.), ME 551 Finite Element Analysis (3 cr.), ME 581 Numerical Methods in Mechanical Engineering (3 cr.), ME 582 Thermal Stress Analysis (3 cr.), ME 614 Computational Fluid Dynamics (3 cr.), Other related-area electives for the non-thesis option only, chosen from the following (maximum of two): CSCI 520 Computational Methods in Analysis (3 cr.), CSCI 614 Numerical Solution of Ordinary Differential Equations (3 cr.), CSCI 615 Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations (3 cr.), PHYS 520 Mathematical Physics (3 cr.), PHYS 545 Solid-State Physics (3 cr.), PHYS 550 Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (3 cr.), PHYS 556 Introductory Nuclear Physics (3 cr.).

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree in engineering, science, or technology, and meet the minimum requirements for undergraduate proficiency in mechanical engineering from an accredited institution with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale and GRE score on the quantitative section is at least 650 and above and for the analytical writing section is at least 4.0 and above. International applicants must have a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based version), 213 (computer-based version), total score 79 (Internet-based version) with writing score of 18, speaking score of 18, listening score of 14, reading score of 19 or an IELTS score of 6.0 or successful completion of ELS Language Centers Intensive Program Level 112. Students from Japan must have a "Pre-First Grade" score on the STEP Eiken.
