This program emphasizes basic research on clinically important problems concerned with the biological, chemical and physical basis of issues related to oral health. Main areas of research focus include: craniofacial physiology including developmental anomalies, immunoregulation, dental outcomes, and dental biomaterials. It is also possible for one to pursue dental and graduate degrees simultaneously providing all entrance requirements are fulfilled. These studies include course work, seminars and significant experience in research. It is expected that students will pursue a program of a multi- or interdisciplinary nature including courses in at least two of the disciplines represented in the department and courses offered on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) or UNMC (Omaha) campuses. The thesis or dissertation will be conducted under the direction of one or more members of the department. Graduate courses offered on the UNL or UNMC campus, for which prerequisites are met, may be taken by MSIA students. This allows maximum flexibility in program design for each student. A particular strength of this program is the degree of collaborative research between faculty of different departments and colleges.

Students must hold a D.D.S., D.M.D., M.D. or a baccalaureate degree from a recognized college or university. In general, to be admitted, students must have achieved a B average as an undergraduate student. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required. Students whose primary language is not English or whose undergraduate degree is from a college or university from a non-English speaking country must present official scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A score of at least 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 213 on the computer-based and 80 on the internet TOEFL is required.
