Students are required to take the core program, including electives related to the area of concentration, the comprehensive examination, which is an integral part of the program, and demonstrate proficiency in counseling skills during a two-semester (6 credit) Internship. A total of forty-eight (48) credits are required for the degree. Students in the School Counseling Programs are eligible to apply for certification upon successful completion of their Master's degree program. Students seeking certification to work in Pennsylvania must complete all requirements for a Master's of Science degree in Counseling and Human Relations with a specialization in Elementary or Secondary School Counseling.

Students must have completed their bachelors degree for admission into masters degree and masters degree for admission into doctoral degree. Some departments require a GPA of 3.0. The minimum acceptable scores for TOEFL are paper-based 550, computer-based 213, and internet-based 80. TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date.
