This program is a post-baccalaureate urban design degree program which consists of 32 credit hours, and is designed to develop a body of knowledge, skills, and experience in urban design with a focus on sustainable urbanism. It recognizes the critical need for understanding cities and their associated regions and aspires to design sustainable urban places. With interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to place, integrating the built and natural environments, and layering culture, economics, history, technology and theory, the program capitalizes on the diverse global background of faculty and strong local connection of the faculty and prospective students to prepare graduates to be leaders in shaping sustainable urban environments. The program is intense, integrated studio-oriented (involving designers + non-designers), and far-reaching, emphasizing local understanding of global systems, reading, and design projects that engage Regional Detroit. The classical city, the industrial city, global city, and the post-industrial city, the town and suburban sprawl, and its social, economic and environmental systems are all subjects for study and design. It takes advantage of the program's location in one of the most unique urban contexts for the theory and practice of sustainable urbanism.

The modules include ARC 5682 History of Urban Form, ARC 5743 Current Issues in Urban Design, ARC 5012 Research Methods, ARC 5742 Urban Design Methods, ARC 5714 Urban Studio 1 (sustainable focus) or ARC 5614 Thesis 1, ARC 5912 Principles and Practices of Urban Design, ARC 5422 Environmental Issues (or equivalent course from other colleges), ARC 5693 Sustainable Urbanism (3 credits), ARC 5724 Urban Studio 2 (sustainable focus) or ARC 6524 Thesis 2, ARC 5772 Case Studies in Urban Design, ARC 5782 Urban Theory, ARC 5762 Urban Design Policy and Implementation, ARC 5752 Quantitative Methods in Urban Design (e.g., GIS, Space Syntax, etc.), ARC 5682 – History of urban form, ARC 5743 – Current issues in urban design, ARC 5912 – Principles and practices of urban design, ARC 5693 – sustainable urbanism.

Students must have completed a bachelor degree (or equivalent 120 acceptable credit hours) from an accredited or recognized institution. They must have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate work. (Candidates who do not meet this requirement may be provisionally admitted after review of their resume, work experience, and/or personal interview). A GMAT is not required for applicants holding a master's degree or who have been previously admitted to a master level program; or bachelor degree or equivalent who has obtained a minimum GPA of 3.0 for their last sixty hours of undergraduate course work. For applicants with a GPA of less than 3.0, a GMAT or other assessment tool may be required. International students for whom native language is not in English should have obtained 79 on the internet based TOEFL or IELTS with a minimum acceptable score of 6.5.
