SP’s Biomedical Informatics Research Track applies natural language processing, Bayesian modeling, and machine learning methods to health care tasks, including disease-outbreak detection and diagnosis, automated tutoring of medical trainees, and discovery of molecular disease biomarkers. The group is composed of physicians and other health care professionals, biologists, and computer scientists. This research track includes projects that benefit both the public and research by grounding work in actual public health practice and by collecting surveillance data for algorithm validation and investigations into the value of different types of novel data for outbreak detection. The group also focuses on genomic and proteomic data: analysis and data mining, data warehouses and repositories, Bayesian modeling and machine learning methods, natural language processing, intelligent tutoring systems and simulations, image analysis, consumer health informatics, and public health informatics and biosurveillance.

The admissions committee is looking for students with strong research potential. Applicants should have evidence of advanced standing and outstanding performance in some of the core areas relevant to the study of intelligent systems, including theoretical and applied computer science, cognitive psychology, other areas of cognitive science, and symbolic programming and software engineering. A BA or BS in one of these areas provides good preparation for entering the program.
