The M.A.T. program in special education is designed for career-changers or those persons deciding to become teachers after graduation from college in an area other than education. These persons may or may not have taken education courses as undergraduates but have an interest in working with students with disabilities. The M.A.T. degree requires 60 semester hours of graduate-level course work. The program, which includes 12 hours of student teaching, normally takes two years to complete.

The courses include EDEX 619 - Nature of Students with Mental Retardation, EDEX 691 - Inclusion: Co-Teaching Students with Disabilities, EDEX 712 - Instruction of Students with Mild to Moderate Retardation, EDEX 716 - Functional Behavioral Assessment and Behavior Interventions, EDEX 790 - Introduction to Assessment in Special Education.

Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate or higher degree with a grade point average of 2.50 or higher from an accredited college or university. International students whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency by obtaining minimum TOEFL score of 570 (paper-based) or 80 (internet-based). Applicants may also take the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) in lieu of the TOEFL. A minimum score of 6.5 is required for the IELTS. Admission also requires submission of scores on either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).
