The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Syracuse University embraces a wide range of academic programs and research areas in Computer Engineering, Computer and Information Science, and Electrical Engineering. They are connected by the technologies they develop and the mathematical methods they use to explore the spectrum of computing and electrical systems. The computer is not only an area of study, but also a design tool permitting visual representation of mathematical models. Moreover, communication and control are of major importance in computing systems, while digital devices and components have become a dominant factor in designing electrical systems. Each of these academic programs offers degrees at the Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Science (MS), and Philosophy Doctor (Ph.D.) levels.

Graduate students have the option of living in University-owned housing on South Campus or in off-campus apartments or houses. Apartment-style university housing is available in Slocum Heights on South Campus, about two miles from Main Campus. Free shuttle bus service is available. These apartments are furnished, utilities are included, and one communications fee covers phone, cable and internet service. Apartment layouts, virtual tours, and associated costs are all available on the University's Housing. There are also numerous apartment complexes and rental houses that the graduate students choose to live in. Many are within walking distance or on the bus line.
