This program prepares professional counselors for employment in educational settings and is designed for those students intending to apply for the state educational staff associate certificate endorsed in school counseling at the elementary and secondary levels. Certification as a public school teacher is not required for admission to the program. The school counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The program contains a thesis option for those students interested in pursuing a research project related to the degree program. The program prepares knowledgeable, skilled, culturally sensitive, and ethical professional counselors who meet the relevant licensing or credentialing standards for practice in mental health and public and private educational settings in the State of Washington.

Students should have a four-year baccalaureate degree from a U.S. college or university that was regionally accredited at the time the degree was conferred, or an equivalent baccalaureate degree from a foreign university; the degree must be appropriate to the master’s study intended. They should have a 3.0 undergraduate grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 90-quarter or 60-semester hours of study. Students who are not native speakers of English must demonstrate competence in written and spoken English. This can be done by submitting a satisfactory score on the international TOEFL, taken within one year of the date of application.
