The Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Nevada, Reno is an interdisciplinary professional degree that incorporates a comprehensive background in the fine arts as well as advanced development in areas of studio specialization. The degree offers students advanced coursework in art history, critical theory and practiced criticism, combining studio and academic experience to provide students the opportunity to synthesize information at a higher level while engaging in original research and the development of a significant body of creative work. The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree is the terminal degree in the Visual Arts and thus, equivalent to terminal degrees in other fields such as the PhD. and EdD. The MFA degree is now considered the national standard required criterion for students expecting to compete as professional artists and/or teach at the college level. Beginning courses encourage the exploration of the fundamental principles of three-dimensional form with projects designed to create a historical awareness while questioning conventional techniques. Advanced students initiate their own projects guided by critical evaluation and technical advice and assistance.

Students should complete their graduate study to apply for masters degree and should complete their masters degree to apply for doctoral degree. The minimum scores required for admission are: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 61 (iBT-Internet-Based Test), 500 (paper-based test) or 173 (computer-based test). Students applying for Graduate Assistantships are required to score a minimum of 79 (iBT-Internet-Based Test), 550 (paper-based test), or 213 (computer-based test) unless departments indicate a higher minimum score. International English Language Testing System (IELTS- must be academic version) with an equivalency score of 6. Graduate assistants are required to score a minimum of 7 unless departments indicate higher minimum score.
