This two-year Professional Theatre Training Program with the Alley Theatre puts students to work immediately. Students across all tracks of study work through the progression of classes as a cohort and collaborate on projects within class and in the productions. The combination of rigorous studio training, diverse production experience, professional networking, and mentoring by the artists of the Alley Theatre will provide a launch for a career like no other program in the country. The artists coming out of this program will be notable for combining five inter-locking qualities: Imagination - broadened in studio training, honed in productions; the creative fuel. Agility - the facility to adapt to new visions, new collaborators, new materials, new techniques across a variety of environments. Precision - the ability to talk about the work and through the work clearly, concisely, and completely. Passion - the graduates thrive in this field because they have a great fire within for the art and craft of the theatre. Speed - the range to shift sensibilities to match the tempo needed for each particular project, whether it’s fast, medium or slow. The University of Houston and Alley Theatre Professional Theatre Training Program combines rigorous training, challenging work in production, and direct and personal connections with the artists of one of the country’s flagship LORT companies. MFA actors, directors, designers, and MA scholars comprise the ensemble. The approach to training is focused on the goal of work. Working in theatre is a collaborative process, so the program emphasizes ensemble building and communication. The professional theatre training program hones the skills needed to get work, work effectively, and build their professional network. The curriculum of the professional theatre training program is a combination of classroom work, rehearsal and production work, and mentorship with Alley Theatre company members. It is a rigorous program designed for artists preparing for meaningful careers in theatre.

The modules are 3 hrs Acting/Directing Theory, 3 hrs Dramatic Theory and Criticism or 3 hrs Selected Periods in Theatre History, 3 hrs chosen from the following: Acting, Set Design, Lighting Design, Costume Design, Make-up. 3 hrs chosen from the following: a) internship with a professional theatre company approved by the Director of the School or b) creative project performed, designed or directed with the School of Theatre and Dance, approved by the Director of the School. Other courses to fulfill the remaining 33 hours are determined by the graduate faculty, with an emphasis on Acting, Directing, or Design tracks.

Students must have earned a four-year baccalaureate degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university, equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor’s degree. Students should have a 3.00 grade point average (A=4.00) on the most recent 60 semester hours of undergraduate coursework. Students must undergo assessment (audition and present their portfolios) by the senior faculty member in their area. Students should have secured a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) on the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or overall band score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
