This program pursues careers in high levels of human resource management, where having the whole picture of how organizations operate gives them a powerful understanding of the relationship between HR strategy and business strategy and the leadership skills to run an organization and have a respected voice in top management decision making. Likewise, those who focus on labor relations find that the MBA/MILR puts them on the fast track in their careers. Others use the dual degrees in the consulting arena, where their depth of understanding of business combined with specialized knowledge about human resource management, labor relations, and other specialized knowledge gives them a powerful edge. For those who pursue careers in Asia, the combination of the MBA/MILR is particularly powerful. Since the field of human resources is particularly valued in Asian organizations, individuals who combine an overall understanding of business with particular strengths in human resource management are highly sought and have great opportunities to advance their careers.

Students should have earned an MBA along with another Cornell graduate degree, these are the Johnson School requirements: 3 semesters in residence at the Johnson School; 45 credit hours, including our MBA core curriculum and 25 credit hours of Johnson School electives; 15 credit hours from the other graduate degree program applied to the MBA. Students seeking admission must have completed a bachelors’ degree. International students must take the GRE exam. Students whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL and have the official score reported to Cornell from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Educational Testing Service provided a new Internet-based Test (iBT) version of the TOEFL. This new version will test all four language skills important for effective communication: writing, listening, reading, and speaking. Each section has its own score, and the Graduate School has set the following minimum scores for admissions: Writing: 20; Listening: 15; Reading: 20; Speaking: 22. Students will continue to accept scores for computer based (cBT) (213 minimum) and paper based (550 minimum) versions of the TOEFL that were taken within two years of the date.
