This specialization offers a rigorous foundation of courses Counseling Psychology, a generally interventional approach to psychology that focuses on assessing and building on clients’ strengths. Students will delve into such topics as counseling theory, individual and group counseling interventions, testing and assessment, research methods and counseling diagnosis. People who choose this specialization are often planning to pursue a doctoral degree in counseling psychology or in a counseling-related field, but may also pursue counseling, employee assistance or research positions in social service, health care, business or educational settings.

Specialization modules include: PSY8090 - Counseling Theories, PSY8091 - Group Counseling, PSY8092 - Counseling Skills and Procedures, PSY5201 - Integrative Project for Master's Degree in Psychology. Recommended elective modules include: PSY7225 - Child and Adolescent Psychology, PSY7310 - Biological Basis of Behavior, PSY8162 - Career Counseling TheoryPSY6310 - Introduction to Theories of Psychotherapy, PSY8510 - Family Systems Theories,PSY8520 - Couples Therapy. For learners interested in gaining practicum experience, the following two-course sequence is available. Students must have completed bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting agency or an internationally recognized institution. They should possess a cumulative GPA of 2.3 from a bachelor's degree granting institution. International students whose language of instruction is not English are required to take one of the following tests: the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum acceptable score of 550 on paper-based test, 213 on computer-based test with a score of 4.0 or higher on the Test of Written English (TWE), or 79 on internet based examination; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score of 80; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a score of 6.5; or Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 59.
