The mission of the Ph.D program in Industrial/Organization (I/O) Psychology at San Jose State University is to provide students a fundamental grounding in theory, research, and application in the field of I/O Psychology. The field of I/O psychology encompasses a wide range of scientific and applied pursuits, and enjoys close collaboration between researchers and practitioners. The program therefore strives to inculcate the value of the scientist-practitioners: to appreciate the theoretical and practical value of pure and applied research, the practical needs of organizations to benefit from scientific research methods and findings as well as "clinical" skills and interventions, and the impact that grappling with applied problems and solutions can have on the development of theory and methodology. Broadly speaking, the Ph.D I/O program is intended to prepare graduates for professional practice and the conduct of research in areas such as: Personnel Selection, Placement and Appraisal; Training, Employee and Management Development; Organizational Development; Research Design, Data Collection and Statistical Analysis; Survey Design, Administration, Analysis, Interpretation and Feedback; Job Analysis and Performance Measurement; Work Motivation, Job Satisfaction and Productivity; Team Building and Self-Managing Work Team Design. The location of San Jose State University in the heart of Silicon Valley affords many opportunities for the practice of I/O psychology. Past students have held internships or received employment in organizations such as Apple Computers, Allstate Insurance Research Center, Hewlett Packard, Intel Corporation, Silicon Graphics, and Sun Microcomputers. Typical positions appropriate for graduates of the program are in medium to large sized corporations (traditionally in the Human Resources department), large research organizations, and human resources or management consulting firms.

To be eligible for admission into our program, student must: Meet all of the University's Office of Graduate Studies and Research admissions requirements, Have the equivalent of a U.S. baccalaureate degree, Have completed a minimum of 30 semester units in undergraduate psychology, Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 semester units (90 quarter units) of all college and/or university coursework, Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all college and/or university psychology courses taken, Have taken the GRE Exam (General Test only), although we do not require a minimum score for your application to be considered.
