The Ph.D. in linguistics typically involves a much broader range of coursework than what is found at more traditional linguistics departments and programs in the United States. The program does not focus on the training of theoretical linguists, but instead sees its mission as that of training historical linguists, language acquisition specialists, sociolinguists, and others, who can apply linguistic theory to the pursuit of their research. Thus, it is typical for a student in this program to use current syntactic theory in investigations into language contact or language variation, or to apply phonological theory to research on second language acquisition.

The course work (21 Hours) include LING 600 - Survey of Linguistics, LING 610 - Introduction to Phonology, LING 620 - Introduction to Syntax, LING 711 - Phonological Theory, LING 721 - Syntactic Theory, LING 730 - Historical Linguistics and LING 739 - The Evolution of Linguistic Theory, Practice, and Methods.

Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university. International students whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency by obtaining minimum TOEFL score of 570 (paper-based) or 80 (internet-based). Applicants may also take the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) in lieu of the TOEFL. A minimum score of 6.5 is required for the IELTS. Applicants must also submit scores from the general GRE for admission.
