This program theory is the study of an economy’s aggregate behavior. Specific topics include the effect of monetary and fiscal policy on output, employment, and price level in both the long and short run; business cycles; the role of different monetary arrangements; determination of the money stock, bank credit and interest rates; the nature of the interacaction between budget and monetary expansion; the relation between inflation, unemployment, and the role of expectations; and the interaction between asset markets and the output market.

Applicants should demonstrate a set of clearly defined career objectives. Applicants are invited to submit additional materials (ex: authored journal articles, masters theses, unpublished manuscripts). Students are accepted from many different disciplines. However, those with an undergraduate degree in fields such as economics, engineering, mathematics, the physical sciences, and business may demonstrate a good preparation for doctoral work at the Simon School. Regardless of the major areas of study, a strong academic record is essential. Many applicants have completed study at a graduate level, but such work is not a prerequisite for admission into the program. GMAT, GRE, TOEFL tests are required. Notarized English translations are required for all official documents and transcripts. In most cases, international students are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL will be waived only for candidates who have studied for one or more years at a college or university where English is the language of instruction.
