This program is primarily a research degree that prepares occupational therapists for advanced scholarly careers in academia and practice. At the completion of the PhD program in Occupational Therapy, the graduate will have demonstrated the ability to contribute new or expanded knowledge, skills, and attitudes to the discipline/practice of occupational therapy, as evidenced by publications in peer reviewed journals, and national presentations at peer reviewed professional conferences. The graduate will demonstrate competency in the development and completion of a program of research that is judged to be consistent with doctoral level performance by both internal and external reviewers.

The program modules include Advanced Theory/Knowledge Base (video-seminar) 15; Statistics and Research (transferable) 6; Measurement Occupational Performance, Qualitative Research Methods (video-seminar) 6; Teaching Practicum, Curriculum Design, Innovative Teaching (practicum) 9; Study in OT area of research (independent) 6; Related area of knowledge (outside OT) 6; Dissertation: 3 interrelated studies synthesized into a body of work (focused on occupational adaptation) 12.

Students should have earned bachelor's degree in any major from an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.0. International students, whose native language is not English, must demonstrate English language proficiency by obtaining minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper - based) or 213 (computer - based) or 79 (internet - based) or on the International English Language Test Service (IELTS) an overall band score of 6.5; or on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) an overall score of 80 as evidence of English language proficiency is required.
