The department offers study in plant pathology, including emphasis on diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and nematodes. Graduate students may specialize in the physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of plant pathogens or host-pathogen interactions; the biology and ecology of plant pathogens; epidemiology and modeling of plant diseases; and the diagnosis and control of plant diseases, including chemical, biological and integrated methods of control.

Students with U.S. bachelors degrees or equivalent degrees from institutions of recognized standing in other countries may apply for admission to Graduate Studies. Assessment of a foreign degree is based on the characteristics of the national system of education, the type of institution attended, and the level of studies completed. Graduate Studies requires the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if native language is not English or instruction has not been in English. The minimum score required for admission to graduate study at UC Davis is 550 for the paper test, 213 for the computer-based test, and 68 for the Internet-based test and IELTS overall BAND score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale.
