This program is highly focused on a curriculum that emphasizes ethnographic methodology, probably the main source of theory in anthropology for the last hundred years. Yet ethnography has too often been treated as an uncomplicated process of participant observation and data collection. Recently, however, the nature of ethnography as a "discovery procedure" has itself become a major creative focus of study within anthropology. Moreover, the nature of ethnographic "representation" has become a central issue, so that competing approaches to ethnography today differ not only in the manner in which they formulate problems and advance strategies of research, but in their object domains, that is, what they actually study. This doctoral program is intended both for students in the master's degree program who wish to continue their ethnographic training and for other candidates who have a particular interest in the regional and topical strengths of the department.

Applicants must hold a four years bachelor’s degree or master’s degree from an accredited institution, as evaluated by the USC Office of Graduate and International Admissions. The college or university must be recognized by the appropriate governmental ministry as a degree-granting institution. University requires a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (on a scale in which A=4.0) and combined Quantitative and Verbal GRE scores of not less than 1,000. To calculate the academic average, USC may convert an overseas grading scale to the U.S. standard scale. Official transcripts must show all courses and subjects taken and all grades (marks) received. Students whose native language is not English must make every effort to acquire English proficiency before beginning graduate study at USC. International students must take the ISE prior to registering for classes at USC if their TOEFL score is: 600 or lower in paper-based test (examination) or lower than 250 in computer-based test or lower than a total score of 100 in Internet-based test, with not less than 20 in each of the four test components. Applicants must have taken the TOEFL test within the last two years.
