The Doctor of Philosophy allows specialization in the fields of Spanish and Spanish-American literature. Students should consult a graduate faculty member as soon as possible to ascertain the areas of specialization in which they may concentrate, especially in regard to the comprehensive and dissertation. The selection of topics for dissertation must be made within the research specializations of the Department's graduate faculty.

Applicants for the Ph.D. degree program must hold (or anticipate completing by the time of admission) an M.A. degree in Hispanic literature from an accredited U.S. college or university, or the equivalent degree from a foreign university, have a minimum grade-point average, both in Spanish and overall, of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and meet the general requirements of the Graduate School and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The department selection committee gives strong consideration to letters of recommendation, the breadth and depth of preparation, the applicant’s statement of goals, and Graduate Record Examination scores (if available). TOEFL: All part scores at least 57 or TOEFL CBT: All part scores at least 23; Essay at least 4.0
