The goal of the doctoral program is to provide professional preparation for individuals interested in careers in institutions of higher education. The number and type of courses vary according to each student’s career goals and previous graduate studies. Courses from the following areas are incorporated in individual program plans: (1) teacher education, (2) qualitative and quantitative research, (3) reading. Additional program requirements include residency, dissertation, participation in faculty-supervised research, and participation in professional activities and conferences. The Program of Study includes a plan for coursework in reading, research, and teacher education. In addition, it includes a plan for engaging in faculty research, teaching, and engagement in professional organizations.

Students applying to the program must have academic and professional backgrounds that meet the admission standards set forth by the School of Education and Department of Teaching and Learning. This program is designed for individuals who have at least a bachelor’s degree. All applicants will undergo a review of their undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Students admitted to the program will be advised of the number of courses that will be required to complete their program. The typical student admitted to this program has an average 3.0 undergraduate G.P.A., an approved GRE waiver or a combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of 1000 and an analytical writing analysis score of 4.0 or above. In addition, professional experience, a well-written statement of goals and strong recommendation letters weigh heavily in the faculty’s admission decision. Students who are applying for tuition assistance from external sources also undergo a thorough entrance interview to determine funding eligibility. During this interview, key project personnel use an interview protocol and applicants are questioned about their knowledge of teaching pedagogy, technology, and their experience working with students with disabilities and their families.
