The Ph.D. in theatre prepares students for scholarly careers in higher education or professional careers outside of academia. The program emphasizes academic studies balanced by theatre and/or film and media production and encourages interdisciplinary and intercultural activity. Students increase their access to un translated literature and knowledge of other cultures by demonstrating proficiency in second or third languages. They develop secondary fields outside the department to broaden their expertise and methodological approaches. After three years of full-time course work beyond the M.A. (50 credit hours or more), students take oral and written comprehensive examinations, then write a dissertation that makes a significant and original contribution to the discipline of theatre.

Candidates for the master’s degree in Theatre and Film elect an emphasis in Theatre Studies or Film. To be admitted, a student will ordinarily be expected to have a Graduate Record Examination score of at least 600 (verbal), 500 (quantitative), and 4.5 (analytical writing). Students who took the GRE before the implementation of the analytical writing section (i.e. before October 2002) will be expected to have an analytical score of 600 or above. To complete the M.A., the student must sustain a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher through 33 graduate credit hours. One official copy of all academic transcripts in English, Three letters of recommendation from qualified individuals, a writing sample (no more than 15 pages) of a major research paper, Statement of personal goals in your pursuit of graduate study.
