The Department of Women's Studies PhD program offers students the opportunity to develop and strengthen their understanding and analyses of feminist thought and movements in an intellectually exciting environment. Students receive a background in theories and movements with the opportunity to develop their own interests with the support from faculty across the university. Providing a foundation in women's issues and feminist theories along with internship opportunities, the program prepares students for doctoral work as well as numerous careers addressing feminist concerns.

Applicants should hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent by the date of entry into the program. An undergraduate major or minor in women's studies or a strong background in feminist theory within the undergraduate major is recommended. The GRE general test is required. Students should meet at least two of the following: A verbal score of 500, a quantitative score of 500, or an analytic writing of 4.5. Applicants must submit departmental application forms, and three letters of recommendation to the department in addition to the Graduate College application. If English is a second language, TOEFL scores of no less than 600 (250) should be submitted to the department as well. The degree program requires 63 graduate credits. Students must consult with their mentor/advisor to determine their plan of study. In addition, students produce a PhD dissertation project which represents a significant piece of intellectual work that synthesizes and reflects the students' years of study. All projects are developed in close consultation with a faculty director who heads the 5-person PhD dissertation committee. Comprehensive examinations, which evaluate the student's understanding of the theoretical and empirical dimensions of feminist scholarship generally, and more specifically in relation to the student's master's project, will occur in the final semester of coursework, before beginning the dissertation.
