First of all consider the course- is it what you want to do? also consider the costs of studying- don't forget to include airfares to and from singapore and australia, food, transportation (international students don't get concession cards whilst studying in melbourne), housing (about 10,000 people are homeless every year) and course costs such as books. have a look on the RMIT website for information on budgeting. i'm liking RMIT so far, eventhough they don't have on campus accomodation.
it was very easy for me since i'm a local student and i did my VCE in melbourne. you needed to get a study score of 20 for english and 60% for your enter score. i did recceive assistance from my careers councillor. one word of advice- its best to do your VCE here than it is over there, as many students are sometimes excluded from the university for failing their courses because they did no previous study here. its also very easy for you to get your enter score here and be selected here. make sure that you do any of the extra requirements that the uni asks you to do, such as an interview or information session.
there's heaps of scholarships for international students from the finance department. there's also a centrelink, but international students are not allowed to recceive any support. i live with my parents so they pay for everything. make sure that you live with relatives or if not make sure that your parents send money to you from overseas. also open a bank account with the commonwealth bank as they have no student fees and have 7% pa on netbank saver.
my course is all about people and technology. i study at the business campus, where they have student support such as the learning skills unit and SLAMS (Student Learning Advisor Mentors). they also have international students support where there are some friendly advisors to help you. they run orientation sessions every semester for new students on how to get used to living in australia and what you need to do to overcome any problems you may have here. Go to your orientation events and get a feel for the uni and know what sort of support they have. most of my teachers are lovely, but some can be really horrible to you.
All the facilities are lovely, compared to VU. we have a gym, cafeteria, library, enviro collective, organic food store, bookshop with student discounts. the student union is really lovely. i work for the student union. i have joined a few clubs and societies, such as Singaporean students Association and the Multicultural society. RMIT association for International Students is a type of club for international students that we run as part of student union. they do all sorts of things such as campaigns for international students to get concession cards. at the start of semester there's an orientation special of $15 per semester or $25 for the whole year membership for student union. so its very worth it. i live with my parents, so there are no accomodation problems and costs here. everyone in melbourne is friendly and there are lots of cafes to suit students budgets and tastes, which i really like. i also like shopping at Bridge Rd, Direct Factory Outlets, QV and Melbourne Central. and i love having chocolate at Max brenner's. its very difficult to find jobs. i've never really see the need to get a job because i live with my parents, but my friends said that it is very hard. you need to have good english and a really good resume, which the uni's careers and employment service can help you with. and remember you only can work for 20 hours a week in a semester, so might not earn a lot of money.
yes, i needed to do this course for me to become a law librarian. there's an alumni group called RMIT Alumni which you can join. when i complete my studies i will keep in touch and will be working in a law library.
