It was daunting to start uni as a mature age person. the preconceptions were will i fit in will the students think i am too old and so on. What i found was the uni i went too was focused on the Mature Age student and people were much more respectful of situations learning abilities and the like. I found it really enjoyable watching the teenagers develop and grow with the mature age students. In some ways they grew up much quick and with more maturity and respect than people i knew in other cities where the ratio was the reverse. I enjoyed the fact we were treated as adults and it was your responsibility to do your work it was also fantastic to have one on one time with lecturers to learn with. I heard friends south of the border were jealous of this knowing they only got to see their lecturer once if they were lucky. The lecturers were also accomodating for those with learning difficulties. I enjoyed the 24 hour access labs and found this assisted my learning immensely. What can i say it was an experience that flew past way to quickly

It was pretty easy going. My Co-ordinator took the initial admission form and guided me through the course content to ensure i came out with suitable qualifications to my needs. I ended up with an accounting major and full compliment of management units. It wasnt exactly easy to get in but i happened to luck a place at the time and i was so greatful that i feared i would fail my first unit and let everyone down including myself. One of the admin staff at the time was a trooper and great value always smiling and knew her stuff after she moved on i can say it went down hill and everyone didnt seem as happy

This was limited and i didnt get the opportunity to find out too much. There was one for women which held (if i remember) 2 places but the competition was great and unless you were an exceptionally bright student the opportunities for others to compete were impossible I think more sponsors or funding should be available to mature age persons as often they give up work but also have household committments to meet many of which do not get centrelink funding. sponsors could provide even textbooks for a term or year of study which would assist greatly. I wished this was available at the time i studied

I really loved the ability to convert the assignments into community projects that were sent to the board of directors and in my case they were used as a foundation to improve the business needs. I did a number of these projects and enjoyed converting the text to the reality of the business world. This became the norm for the course as time progressed and something that i believe should be the norm in most subjects. The lecturers i had were fantastic they knew their stuff were patient and were enthusiastic at ensuring we understood how to learn or what learning style suited us as individuals. One of my lecturers was frustrated with me one day as i always had the answer to the question but i could never explain how i got there. Eventually he recommended to get checked out by the optometrist who found i had mild dyslexia. Knowing this we worked a way to learn differently to ensure i could show how i got the answer rather than the answer is... the lecturer was excited to find i did extremely well in his subjects there after. I think the staff/lecturers we had enjoyed the more mature age student as well as they could be more them selves and be respected for their knowledge and wisdom. For some one studying accounting or business related topics yes it can be tedious but it is the foundation to all business today. I went into it without knowing what to expect and found myself loving accounting. I struggled with the younger students constant negativity of stating this is boring when in fact i really got excited over the topic. I think this is the hardest area to convert thinking for anyone who really doesnt like a topic and it becomes a disease within the course content. I think that is where a more mature age class room attributes to minimising this impact.

What life!!!! I spent all spare time learning how to learn whilst learning the topic content....I enjoyed the student interaction between classes and those who met in the computer labs to study. I didnt like the noisy attributes of the library when you needed somewhere quiet to learn. It seemed there were tute rooms in the library that the noisy students refused to use and in the end the quiet students ended up booking just to get their work done. I rented a place on my own at the time off campus...it was definately a struggle at the time but looking back i managed. You could always get work in restaurants and bars if desparate enough i worked in restaurants and picked the ones that gave you meals to survive by.

I believe it assisted in getting the job i have now but i believe the job i have now has hit a dead end and unless i go back to uni to do extended studies it seems now a batchelor degree is not worth very much at all. I want to do more and from time to time i have tried to take up studies externally but it is extremely difficult working FT and managing a very young family leaving little or no time to study. to give up work now would mean hitting the wall financially to finalise study. I still have 3 years of hecs to pay off....I dont think we have and alumni and if we do i dont know of it....I currently work in the fed govt in an area that is contested strongly by the current govt and has also attributed to reduction in opportunities.
