I loved my university experience. Made alot of friends and it was an excellent opportunity to interact with students from around the world. The most important advice would be to come here with an open mind and be willing to make new friends and experience new cultures. There are those who just stay home and study all day as well as those who study hard and play hard but its good to have a well balanced lifestyle especially when you're so far from home. Its is also good to learn more about the cultures and people from different countries.
The selection process was pretty straight forward, they look for students with credit average and above. Its easier to get into the Arts and Sciences faculties. I applied directly through the UNSW office in Singapore. I found out about their services online and through various seminars held by IDP. My experience getting a visa was pretty simple. The main hassle was to do the medical checkup and going through a long online process. I believe that the visa can only be applied online. My advice? Go to the immigration DIMIA website! They have a list of FAQs that answer every question and you can email them if you have any further queries. Don't bother calling as very often they put you on a long queue. Go check the website and print out the list of instructions and items you need to get the visa processed and do it step by step. Allow plenty of time for the application process, I would say at least a month.
AUSAID is available for students from selected asian countries. I believe the easiest way for Singaporean students would be to try to apply for a scholarship from home rather then in Australia. Write to all the Major associations like the LEE foundation for example. Explain in your letter why should you be given a scholarship over other students.
As i did a double major I would have to answer this question in 2 parts. Media : Structured but alot of self studying and exploration is required to be good at it. The good thing is that you claim ownership over the whole media assignment. I did about 5hours on average for each subject. Lecturers and tutors like to encourage students to think out of the box and they guide you along the way rather then spoon feed you. The study support was good as we had 24 hour access to labs with the latest computers. Value for money is subjective. University fees are really expensive and they churn out thousands of graduates every year and these students will all be competing for the same jobs. For its price, I would say it offers the same as any University would. Psychology: Interesting and well planned. Very competitive as there are lots of brilliant students.
UNSW has a big campus which is great. Its good to just chill on the lawn and read a book or have a chat with mates at the cafe in between classes. Kingsford which is the next suburb is awesome as the whole street is lined up with restaurants! There is a good selection of international variety and the prices are as cheap as it gets for students. The beach is only 10mins away and its good to jump in the water in summer or do some surfing in winter to relieve stress between classes. There is also a gym and lots of supermarkets. I live in a 2 bedroom apartment with another singaporean housemate. The prices are pretty much fixed and the real estate agent decides on the market rate. You cant really go wrong if you go through an agent. Some students have had nasty experiences and they get cheated when they deal directly with the landlord. Generally if you want to come to sydney, be prepared as the property and rental prices are pretty high. It should cost an average of $200 a week for an unfurnished room, not including utility bills. Give at least 2 weeks buffer to find accomodation. On-campus accomodation are generally packed and priority is given to those who apply a year in advance or final year students. Part time work is readily available from delivery to restaurant work or at the supermarkets. The Union? Well from what i know they organize a couple of BBQs here and there. Its pretty expensive to join now with VSU in place. What that means is you join the unions voluntarily and because not everyone is in it, you have to pay more to join. Yes I was in the Singapore students association for my first year and I was in the Karate club for 3 years. Its alot of fun and there are plenty of societies catered for different interest groups from religion to nationality and sport.
I have been looking for a job for the past 2 months now that I have graduated and it is anything but easy. I would say YES getting a job is easier with a degree but it isnt EASY per say. Try to get an internship in your penultimate year or do part time work that is relevant to your course if you wanna secure employment after graduation. It also pays to get good grades. YES, Distinction and above to be safe. Yes there is an Alumni. I am working part time and looking for full time job at the moment.
