I’m Seth Alder from Cincinnati, Ohio. I chose to attend Middle Tennessee State University for graduate school because it is one of a handful of universities in the nation that offers a graduate program in the Recording Industry. I found MTSU by doing a great deal of Web research. The location was right, the way the program was set up was right, and the fact that it was a new master’s degree program was also right. Being a part of the inaugural class was very attractive to me. And the fact that it is so close to Nashville is a really big advantage. The thought of doing graduate school was a way to start a new chapter in life. I came to MTSU because the RI program is the best in the nation. I knew I would get an exemplary education; I never expected to be welcomed so whole-heartedly and made to feel like one of the family. Come, be one, too.

The one thing I really appreciate about studying in the Recording Industry program at MTSU is that the graduate faculty is really good about treating the students as junior faculty, especially in the situation that I was in, a member of the inaugural class. We have almost as much input as the other professors in sculpting and molding the program. If they have a problem or an issue, they’ll approach us for an answer. I feel like what I did mattered. Other large universities I have attended have made me feel insignificant, like a number. At MTSU, everyone I talked to wanted to know my name. Even though it is a large school, the feeling is really that you have a one-on-one education and relationship with the faculty and staff. I feel it is unique to MTSU–maybe it’s the Southern hospitality. But it is definitely an advantage to be treated as a person and not as a number.

Through my classes and my other activities, I have made a lot of connections in the industry. Not only have I met people who are actually out there doing what I want to do, I am meeting other students who are also active in the industry. We have one of the largest student chapters of the Audio Engineering Society here on campus. The AES events on campus and in Nashville put me face-to-face with talented industry professionals. It provides opportunities for involvement and networking, which is what this business is all about.
