The Diploma at Birkbeck consolidated my knowledge and enabled me to apply my experience more efficiently. I only had experience of working in public-sector museums before, but my course at Birkbeck played a fundamental role in getting me a new position in a private art gallery.

In 2004, I applied for a Diploma in Arts Policy and Management at Birkbeck. My course included regular visits to art organisations such as the Tate Modern and the Welcome Trust, to artists studios and to private art galleries. I also had the opportunity to collaborate for two months on a project with the V&A Museum in the marketing and press office. It gave me the opportunity to deal with theoretical and policy planning on a larger scale, not only for different departments within the museum but also in other areas such as theatres, orchestras and private art galleries.

If you are looking for a job in arts management, be flexible and be prepared to learn. Dont work in one sector only, try different departments and institutions. Look at the arts from different perspectives, the right position will come up at the right time. My course at Birkbeck played a fundamental role in getting me a new position in a private art gallery and working as Assistant Manager, Lavanta Galleria.
