I sure will recommend Durham to other aspiring business managers in search for MBA destinations.
My experience was both challenging and at the same time rewarding. Of note was the Boardroom Activity, which I found quite stimulating as it enabled me to confront some of the challenges of a real boardroom and provided an avenue to display my leadership and organizational skills, and also the opportunity for intense teamwork with a cohort with different backgrounds and cultures. The electives were particularly suitable for me as they gave me a deeper understanding of finance and exposed me to the process of conducting business in this dynamic age. In particular, the Corporate Finance module was outstanding as it provided a perfect mix of both theory and practice. The beauty of all the modules was the practical approach to equip students for the real business world. I also have to mention the career development programmes which sought to develop soft career-enhancing skills such as negotiation, presentation, networking and interview skills. Durham was not just about rigours. We found time for team building with an induction weekend in the Lake District at the beginning of the course. Several other social events and exchange programmes were organized during the year-long study that made it all the more rewarding.
I visited the Durham schools website and immediately ended my search. It had all the qualities I was looking for and I literally ticked them all off my list - good ranking, location conducive for intensive post-graduate study, a comprehensive and attractive programme etc.
Upon completing the MBA, I rejoined Guaranty Trust Bank as manager in the Oil and Gas division of the bank, to manage a new business unit mandated to develop business opportunities with indigenous E&P operators. The job involves extensive elements of corporate finance and relationship management. No doubt, the skills acquired during my MBA has enabled me perform excellently in this role and will hold me in good stead for the rest of my career.
