The build-up to leaving work and starting the MBA at Exeter was like hitting the ground running. I had one weeks holiday before leaving a busy Exeter based business and changing my life completely to become a full-time MBA student. My head was spinning, but the thought of a new chapter was exhilarating! The introductory week flew by and was an initially daunting, but delightful, mixture of meeting new people from home and abroad, getting familiar with our new University surroundings and far too many glasses of wine. Then the work started and it came thick and fast. But this was why I had given up my job and returned to University. I tried to suss out the group as fast as possible and figure out who were the highly experienced managers and who felt like me - slightly out of my depth! Looking back now, almost everyone felt like me. We were all there to learn and none of us had much of an idea what to expect.
The first term introduced five core subjects, Operations, Accounts, Marketing, Finance and Organisational Behaviour. In all honesty, I only had a rough idea of what these subjects would consist of, but as the weeks passed I quickly realised that Id been spending the past 5 years doing all of this in my job, sometimes badly, sometimes just right. I found myself feeling as though the light had been switched on to some of the problems Id encountered whilst running my business. Some on the course were already familiar with these subjects because of their job experience, but that was the beauty of the course design. We had to form groups to work in, and being able to learn from others in the group was something I hadnt really appreciated and really benefited from. The second semester of the MBA was, for me, the most interesting. I had always found marketing a very interesting subject and in the following 10 weeks we began to delve into the mechanics of the marketing machine and understand the incredible complexities of branding, consumer behaviour and web-based marketing. Each of the subjects I chose varied in their teaching format. Some were small informal tutorials where we digested the module syllabus via discussions and presentations where everyone felt free and comfortable to air their opinions. Others were in the more traditional lecture format, but each one with an emphasis on student participation and discussion. I felt incredibly motivated and excited about the subjects I had chosen and sought to understand the most up-to-date academic theories which moved beyond the more traditional marketing textbooks which we had studied in the first semester. This term was more about challenging and stretching our basic understanding which, in retrospect, is just what a course such as an MBA should be teaching. The second term was also the time to plan our dissertation which would make up most of the third semester. I approached one of our leading Devon companies, Burts Chips, who were more than happy to accommodate me. This was where I could start to fully flex the knowledge I had acquired and apply it to a real life business. The third and final chapter of my Exeter MBA experience took place out of the classroom. The focus for the last semester was on module coursework and the looming dissertation.
If you are reading this and thinking of an MBA, then based on my experience be prepared for a rollercoaster ride, but one which will enlighten you, stretch your thinking and your capabilities and potentially provide you with a new career. You will also have the amazing opportunity to meet people from all over the globe who will become firm friends for the future. Thanks go to all my fellow students from the 2006/7 MBA year, to the wonderful Maureen Costelloe and the teaching staff who inspired me.
Several of my close MBA colleagues found work in new areas and in more senior positions. Consultancy, directorship and senior management positions came quickly to some and it was a joy to hear of friends finding new and exciting work roles. Reflecting on my career pre-MBA, my choices felt somehow closed. Post MBA, I felt I had a wealth of choice. I now had knowledge of all the core business functions and an appreciation of how these must work in union. Marketing had remained a keen interest and as the course came to a close, I became convinced that this was the area of work I wanted to be in. As a student of Marketing I had become exposed to the latest theories in this field and how these are being applied in the 21st century.
