It was in the UK that I discovered my Japanese identity. I studied Fine Arts in Japan…did my bachelors and masters there. The reason I came to London was to study more western art and to show my work to that audience. I spent 2 years at the Royal College of Art and wanted to stay on afterwards.

I can remember there was a professor who asked me why I did not use my own subject matter like shrines, carps and pines. I tried to explain to him how Westernised Japan was an how I was inspired by Western Art.

Everyone expected me to be very Japanese. Part of the reason to stay in the UK was because I wanted to show people how Westernized Japan was. I now allow myself to use Japanese icons in my pictures, and when I was in Japan I never thought like that. I found my Japaneseness in this country.
