I think studying at NUS is great. It's a multicultural university with most of the students from Asia and a few from the West. It's easy to make friends and the University is a beautiful place to live and study. All sorts of facilities are available in NUS either for free or for a small fee. The only drawback is that I didn't like many of my lecturers. They didn't have good teaching methods and I had to study on my own. However, since I've completed just one year in University, I'm hoping that I have better lecturers in the future.
Getting a place in NUS is very easy if you have the required grades. No essays or any other extra-curricular activities are required which I found a bit strange. Hence, they ask for very high results. For international students they look for minimum 4A's, but the competitiveness is different for the different courses. I know that it's very high for Medicine and Engineering.
I've heard that the scholarships in NUS are really good, but for some reason they are not open to Sri Lankan students. However, the university does offer merit scholarships for all students who do well during their study, that is have a very high CAP (GPA in NUS). Many loans and bursaries are available for the financially needy, together with the well-known tuition grant. These provide a great opportunity to study in NUS for people who can't afford the high living and accommodation costs in Singapore.
I'm doing Electrical Engineering and so far I've liked it, even though I had a lot of self-study to do. The work-load is very high, so I had to put in at least 5 or 6 hours of study in my room per day. Some of the lecturers were boring whereas I found a few very interesting. The lecturers and tutors are mostly very friendly and approachable for consultation at any time. I think the best bits about studying engineering in NUS would be the practical side of it.
The University facilities are superb and accessible throughout the day at any time. Singapore is a fun place to live and study and I enjoyed a lot in my first year. There are a lot of things students can do for fun, like ice skating, bowling, movies and the new Universal Studios that has come up. Accommodation, though expensive, is worth the money. Rooms are very comfortable and ideal for studying. Part-time jobs are pretty easy to find, but they don't pay much. There are numerous clubs and societies that one can join. There are clubs for like dancing, outdoor and indoor sports, and intellectual games; and there are societies for debates, MUN, Infusion night, and other country and religious societies.
I think job prospects aren't too bad. Since I'm a second year I don't have a very good idea about the jobs available, but I think internships and students exchanges which are always available to do in NUS, will increase the chances of getting a job later. And yes, I would keep in tough with the alumni. It is the alumni who provide most of the funding for the student loans and bursaries and I would like to contribute to the University after my graduation.
