The most important thing is to be open minded. The culture shock is overwhelming and you should remain open to everything. Another piece of advice I would give is to try and dorm on campus for at least your first year of university. It is a great way to make friends especially if you're all alone in a foreign country.
As long as you are doing well, getting into SUNY Buffalo should not be a problem. They have detailed steps to follow on their website. I sent in my application through the Taylor's College American Degree Program and you can do the same through whatever college you are attending. Obtaining my visa was surprisingly easy. As long as you have all the necessary documents, getting a visa should not be a problem. Make sure you send in your applications early and not wait till the last minute.
It is rather hard to recieve scholarships as an international students. However, since SUNY at Buffalo is a state school, it is one of the more affordable schools in the United States.
For political science, I was given the oppurtunity to concentrate in what I really wanted to do (International Relations) as SUNY Buffalo offer a wide variety of concentrations. I was also fortunate enought to have intern in Washington DC over the summer through a SUNY Washington Internship program. As for dance, SUNY Buffalo has a prestigous Dance Program and many student have gone on to join dance companies all over the country after gradation.
Since there are many international students in SUNY Buffalo, i managed to make many friends you made me feel 'close to home'. It is always good to mingle with different people, but when you are away from home for such a long period of time, it is comforting to know that there are people who feel the same way as you do. I was lucky and my social life here was amazing as I managed to form two groups of friends, with the locals and the international.
SUNY at Buffalo is one of the best schools in the SUNY system. It is recognized worldwide and therefore would increase potential job prospects. As one of the biggest schools in New York, with a significant number of international students, you will not only graduate with contacts from the United States, but from all over the world.
