Basically my college experience has been good. The most important advice that i would give to anyone who is thinking of studying at my college is to have an open mind. In Republic Polytechnic (RP), Problem Based Learning (PBL) is the primary method of learning. In PBL, it is very important to approach each day with an open mind. In a day's lesson, students would have to work together with classmates and also accept critics at the end of the day. In RP we have our lessons in three parts. During the first meeting, students will be introduced to the problem statement for that day. During the second meeting students will further explore into the problem and have a scope or direction regarding the day's lesson. During the last meeting, students will then present their solution to the problem for that day. They will then learn from one another's presentation and lastly the facilitator will then present a suggested solution for the class.
My process of being awarded a place at RP was very straight forward as a local student. I went through Singapore Ministry of Education's (MOE) Joint Admission Excerise (JAE) to enter into RP. This is a very common route that most Singapore students take. The basic criteria for entering a polytechnic is to have at least 5 passes for an O'level examinations. It also depends on the diploma. Different diplomas have different requirements on the subjects that students have to pass before they can enter the diploma course.
My course is about studying how the different designs and things that we come across everyday interacts with the human mind. The best bits of this diploma is to enjoy and realise the designs around you from a different point of view. In RP we do not have lecturers nor tutors. However we have facilitators who facilitate the lesson in the classrooms. In RP we are not provided with the answers but guided to discover a solution to the problem. It is indeed important to have the correct answer however the process of learning is more of the focus instead. Yes i do receive the study support that i need as the facilitators and staff of RP are very helpful.
The facilities in RP are considered good as we are a rather new campus. In RP we have a sports complex and also a swimming pool. Rp also has an adventure elemental course too. Therefore students in RP not only provide a good surrounding for students to excel in their academic but also in their interest and fitness. RP is also located in a heartland area which also means that the things are considered cheaper as compared to that of town.
Yes i do believe that my job prospect have increased as a result of my studies because a higher qualification means much in Singapore. Singapore is a very competitive country and there are many people with high qualifications. Therefore without a proper qualification in Singapore it is tough to survive in the society and compete with the rest. I do believe that RP graduates will be able to face the competition in the future as the way we are taught in school allows us to face a problem differently as compared to other students from other polytechnic. This is an element that employees would look out for when they are hiring staffs for their companies.
