Ah University. The Tertiary Education System. The place to be. Or is it? I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. All I knew is that I wanted to do something that was creative and engaging and would never grow stagnant. So I enrolled myself in an Communications degree at UTS and decided to major in Advertising. After all there's a successful career path in Advertising. And so began my uni life: early morning lectures coffee tutorials coffee trying to find obscure books in the catacombs of the library coffee public transport more coffee. I make it sound so dull but it actually isn't that bad. Being at UTS meant having great facilities and a great location (literally the epicentre of Sydney City) and the degree was engaging too. It allowed me to have a creative output while grounding it in real-world practices. And that right there is the core of uni life at UTS. At UTS everything you do is related back to the real world. Yes theory can be boring and assignments hold no currency in the workplace but everything on offer is specified to suit a student about to approach the real working world. From arranged internships to industry guest speakers UTS goes that extra little bit to ensure their students are competitive in the employment market. And that's one thing other Universities lack I think. They're too caught up in Old World politics and prestige and their missing the real point: that students go to uni to become more competitive upon graduation. Because that's what a degree is: a ticket to the big leagues. But at UTS a degree is so much more - it's a 'sign on the dotted line and you're hired' experience.
UAI marks don't count for everything. At UTS they often make concessions on students who have done extra-curricular activities. So make sure you ask around and see if anything can be arranged before accepting an offer.
I have no idea I wish I was eligible on some level!
B.A. in Comm. (Pub. Comm.) Value for money? No. If I could tell all other fresh students what to do it would be to go work in the industry be a shit-kicker coffee-maker: whatever it takes to at least experience what happens in the real world. Because unfortunately the people teaching are slightly out of touch in an industry which is rapidly changing. Go out get a feel for the industry find out what skills are needed (not degrees) and go from there.
UTS seems to lack much of a social life in comparison to other Universities but there is a lot on offer. Just not as many people giving a damn unfortunately.
I think having completed my course will certainly benefit me in the Advertising industry however I would have rather done a fine arts degree instead because then I'd have better skills in the area I wish to pursue employment in. And I only found this out when I began working in the industry.
