Coming from the Central Coast I was used to a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. I started my Uni life at Sydney University where I found the travel and the pace very fast and intense. I then transferred to Newcastle University Ourimbah Campus and have never looked back. The atmosphere is casual relaxed and pleasant. There are some fantastic facilities such as wi-fi all over the school computer rooms available 24 hours and a huge library that serves both online and at the uni. The cafeteria is always stocked with healthy options at reasonable (for uni students) prices. The student hub provides information and access to many services such as international program information. The class sizes are small and intimate and allow for better one on one tutoring and the lectures are entertaining and educational. The social scene is great for new students. They run a 'buddy' program to initiate new students and there are many parties and events advertised around the school all year.
I applied for mid-year entry. The process was simple and easy to follow. I applied through UAC and was accepted on the first round. The uni website was very helpful in class selections and course organization. I advise starting at the beginning of the year however as it is easier to start with semester one subjects rather than coming in on semester two subjects and then having to go back and do the pre-courses for the courses youve just completed.
There are some fantastic scholarships for indigenous students and for international study programs. The website provides plenty of information and the student hub is helpful in answering any questions. I am currently in the process of applying for a travel scholarship to complete a year overseas the process has been simple and easy.
Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Teaching is a great course for people who are interested in teaching or education but arent positive. The best thing about this course is the Links program. The uni hooks you up with a primary school where you go in once a week for a few hours and experience teaching in real life. This starts in the second semester of first year and is a fantastic way to understand and experience the real world of teaching. The courses are flexible and the class sizes small. There are three compulsary units each semester and one key learning area or KLA that you choose from a range of interesting classes such as guitar art physical education or drama.
I am currently living at home. The area has many pubs and clubs that are great for the weekends or after uni. There are heaps of shopping centres and cinemas close by and a train station that runs directly to the uni. There are plenty of job opportunities which are advertised through the student mail and in the local newspaper and there are a few on site accommodation options as well as rentals in the vicinity.
I love that the uni provides the opportunity to experience the workforce throughout the entire degree I believe that the connections that are being made will lead to greater job opportunities in the future. The Coast has a large number of teachers looking for work so the relationships gained through the program could prove to be necessary in securing a position on the Coast.
