The best thing about the University of Newcastle is its laid back lifestyle and lecturers. Everyone here is really nice and I know many internationals who have enjoyed their stay here. I also enjoy The University of Newcastle because it is located in a big city but doesn't feel as if it is because it is divided into many smaller suburbs. The campus is also situated in scenic bushland which also eliminates some of the scariness involved with going to uni in a big city. I have also had experiences with the on campus accomodation colleges which are alot of fun. This is especially true for international students or students from out of town who are able to meet lots of new people. Fun events are also organised for specific courses (such as balls) although my course has yet to have one of these. The one problem I have with the University of Newcastle is in relation to organisation. I have often had trouble starting/finishing/correctly doing assignments because we have not been provided with the right details in time. Something also needs to be done about lecturer absentees. It is annoying to go to class (especially if you walk and take public transport)and find a note on the door saying they are not coming to class when you could have been doing many of the other things a busy uni student has to do.
I applied to the University of Newcastle through UAC which is based on UAI points. It was quite easy to get accepted as the UAI cut off points were quite reasonable.
I was a receipient of a commonwealth accomodation scholarship which was quite easy to obtain. I would definitely recommend people apply for it if they receive centrelink payments or if they are from a rural area.
My course is lots of fun. The seminars and tutorials are generally small so this enables interaction among students and tutors. We have also had a lot of real life accomplished teachers who have come in to be our tutors. This gives us some idea of what it's like to teach out in the real world.
There are many facilities at uni for students apart from those related to the academic. On both sides there are places to eat and buy food and there are also 2 bars on campus. These places give students to socialise and meet other students with similar interests. I live off campus and it is very good value for money. Rent electricity internet and furniture (even plates and cups) are all included. There are many places like this around Newcastle which include utilities and it makes it easier for those who are just out of home and haven't had experience paying bills. Furnished houses also mean students low on cash don't have to go and buy their own.
I believe my job prospects after uni are very high because my university allows students a wide choice of minors so that they have extra qualifications and more chances of securing a job.
